RFID NFC and metal?
RFID NFC tags and metal – can they be used?
Do you know ?
That ordinary RFID / NFC tags (eg proximity cards, stickers, key rings, etc.) “lose range” or will not work at all in a “metal” environment? Is there any solution?

Thank you for the interest of the staff work control system Seven Guard.
We started the production of our system at the end of the 90s. of last century. At first, it was designed for controlling the work of guards, but for all those years we have improved it continuously, finding new applications.
Description of problem:
How to easily, cheaply and objectively supervise people work/movement (or movement of objects) that should be in particular places in a specific time?
Can such control be “automated” so as not to devote too much time and attention of managing people, at the same time guaranteeing the required level of commitment of the supervised employees?
As an example:
• a nurse is to check a patient’s condition (or of medical apparatus) e.g. every 2 hours at night or every 4 hours during the day,
• a guard should check the protected facilities in the specific order, every 30-90 minutes,
• a company maintaining some equipment (e.g. lifts, extinguishers, alarm systems, light-signalling or any other) should do it e.g. once a quarter,
• a player (e.g. orienteering/field races) has to achieve certain control points,
• a cleaning woman should “visit” toilets on 1st and 2nd floor every hour, and on 3rd and 4th floor every 2 hours,
• a maintenance worker is to check all machinery rooms and switching stations every 3 hours,
• a driver must leave the base at 6:00 am +/-10 min and deliver a cargo to a place A at 10:15 am +/- 30 min and to a place B at 12:30 pm +/- 20 min,
• a work group responsible for temporary road signs during the road reconstruction is liable to check the traffic lights operation and the signs placement e.g. every 3 hours during the day and at 10 pm, midnight, 3 am, 5 am, 6 am +/- 20 min. at night,
• anybody (or anything, e.g. container) should be in a specific place at a specific time or generally the only important thing is when (for sure) s/he/it was there.
Solution:
The system was made just for solving this problem. The idea of the system is simple and consists in placing in the supervised locations small and cheap control points. These points are resistant to atmospheric conditions and do not need power supply.
The employees should be equipped with small recorder Seven Guard and… the problem is solved!
After arriving at the place with mounted control point, it is enough to touch for a second the recorder to the point, to make it record in its non-erasable memory the exact date and time of presence of a supervised person in a given place.
The events stored in the recorder may be anytime read out in any computer or they may be automatically sent “to the central unit” via e-mail.
We are going to introduce soon the version of recorder with in-built GSM module, enabling to send the information on events immediately after their occurrence (on line) and other version of Seven Guard with GPS receiver allowing to locate the device fast.
The most important feature of our system is as follows:
What definitely distinguishes our system from the paper reports and similar methods is the possibility for independent (automatic) check whether in a given period everything ran properly.
If it is possible to establish any periodic schedule of individual employees’ stay in specific places (work schedule), the computer (and the recorder itself in limited scope) will analyse itself even thousands of records and prepare the concise report quickly (for any period of time) including only the information on errors at work (e.g. absence in a given place or presence on improper time, etc.).
The supervising person can check the work of employees anytime fast, easily and OBJECTIVELY; check its course, and the saved time and energy can be devoted to other tasks.
Of course, analogically, you can supervise the relocation of objects – all you must do is to fix permanently to them the control points/identifiers.
Who needs this:
The system Seven Guard was created on the demand from the companies dealing with the security issues and armed forces and it has been commonly used in those places for many years.
It the course of time, it has been applied also in many applications other than the protection: e.g. maintenance service teams in the industry plants, transport companies, construction companies, health service centres and care institutions, cleaning companies, Municipal Guards, road maintenance, and even sea trade.
The application possibilities are almost unlimited and depend only on the invention and imagination of people responsible for supervision over employees or over the object relocation.
Is this “surveillance”?
Definitely NOT. Surveillance is a secret observation of someone or secret supervision over someone.
This system has nothing in common with the surveillance. Firstly, it is completely an OVERT supervision over the staff work, and secondly, the only thing to check is whether a given person does his/her PROFESSIONAL duties properly, for which s/he receives the salary.
It can be said that lack of such OBJECTIVE supervision over the reliable execution of tasks for which we pay is something inappropriate and shows some “unconcern” of responsible people for such state of affairs.
The implementation of the system Seven Guard will be welcomed by employees who reliably carry out their duties (because they can finally demonstrate this is the case), but it will not arouse enthusiasm for those who only make… ”good impression”.
